What good is being thin if your brain isn’t healthy?
Dec 13, 2023Have you ever thought about brain healthy foods? Today I want to share some of the best brain healthy foods that also assist in fat loss.
Let’s first talk about Omega-3 fatty acids. Why? Because Omega-3 fatty acids play a critical role in the health of your brain cells. Not only that, but they also reduce inflammation in the brain.
Here are some foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids:
- Fatty fish such as salmon, cod, and canned light tuna
- Flaxseed
- Avocado
- Walnuts (they are shaped like a brain for a reason).
While we are on the topic of walnuts – let’s talk about them a bit more. Compared to other tree nuts, walnuts are much higher in plant source of omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids can’t be made in our bodies – we get them from our food – but they are essential for brain health and cognition, as well as cardiovascular health. Walnuts contain healthy fats, antioxidants and vitamin E that can help reduce brain inflammation and support healthy cognition as we age.
Here are a few delicious walnut recipes.
Other foods great for avoiding memory loss or brain fog include:
- All types of green leafy vegetables.
- Other vegetables such as green and red peppers, squash, carrots, broccoli, celery, tomatoes, beets, and lima beans.
- Berries – strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries.
- Nuts
- Olive oil
- Chicken or turkey
Foods to avoid:
- The Western Diet of red meats and fried food.
- White bread, white rice, pasta, and anything made from refined sugar.
- Gluten
The foods you eat can have just as profound an effect on your brain as the drugs you take.
Your brain health matters more than anything else. If you are eating foods that support brain health, I can guarantee that your body is also healthier.
