The Secret to Staying Young
Mar 09, 2022Life is full of responsibilities. Now that Covid-19 restrictions are lifting we are getting back to our go-go-go lifestyle.
Seeing children play brings us so much joy. I think that is because it takes us back to a simpler time in life when we ourselves enjoyed having fun and playing. Now we are experiencing so much unrest in the world, so much division among ourselves and the evening news will send you into a tailspin of depression if you let it.
Want to know the secret to staying young? Turn off the news and PLAY. Play has been shown to release endorphins, improve brain function and stimulate creativity. The best part – play improves memory and grows new brain cells.
Are you one that gave up play as an adult to pursue a demanding career. Or do you allow relationships and families to stand in your way of play?
This stress we are experiencing daily shrinks and ages our brain. Burnout isn’t a symptom of doing too much but rather not enough of what brings us joy. What type of play could you participate in that brings you JOY?
There are a lot of fears associated with growing older. So many we cannot control. But there are things we can do to fight the aging process and something as easy as scheduling play will have so many benefits for you.
Here are some different types of play:
- Physical Play – this could include scavenger hunts, kickball, pickleball, dodge ball.
- Board Games – these could include chess, monopoly, card games. These can help you engage in strategy and bring people together for a common purpose or goal.
- Using your Imagination – pull out the Legos, blocks or have a snowball fight. This type of play will really bring you back to your childhood.
- Body Play – this includes yoga, Pilates, hiking, riding roller coasters, mountain climbing, surfing or snorkeling.
There is a power to play. Laughter has a huge impact on how we age. And there is so much that can be learned through creating. How we age depends on how we live life. How about rolling the dice (pun intended) and allow play back into our lives? What does that look like for you? Excuse me while I go for my weekly pickleball game. Would love to hear your comments on how you play.
Have a fabulous day!
