How to REALLY build better habits
Dec 05, 2023You’ve probably heard that it takes 21 days to develop a new habit. As it turns out, that’s not exactly true. This myth comes from a study done by a plastic surgeon, Maxwell Maltz, who wrote a best-selling book in the 1950s about how long it took his patients to notice physical changes.
What he concluded was that it doesn’t take 21 days for new habits to form, but rather a minimum of 21 days…
A more recent study done in 2009 proves that it could take up to 254 days for a habit to form, with the average being around 66 days. We should’ve known 21 days was a little too easy. After all, we’ve all tried challenges that lasted 21 days, 30 days, etc., only to go back to our former lifestyle after it was over.
Am I right or am I right?
The “21 days” myth is often what prompts these challenges you hear about in the health & wellness world. A 21-day challenge, 30-day challenge, or even a six-week challenge is much easier for a health coach to sell than one that requires a lifelong commitment…
The truth, however, is that it is a lifelong commitment. 💯
I have two pieces of good news, though!
- You don’t have to focus on the end goal. You only have to focus on TODAY and you keep doing that over and over.
- Somewhere between 21 days and 254 days, it’ll become a habit. Once it becomes habitual, it becomes your way of life and it no longer feels like a “have to”, but rather a “get to”! 🙌
Beginning January 1, 2024, you’ll have the opportunity to join me and thousands of others as we develop habits through, you guessed it, a challenge…😉 I promise this isn’t just any challenge, however! This challenge is meant to educate you and get you started on building the life you dream of! It won’t end after 21 days, 30 days, or six weeks because as we’ve now learned, that method doesn’t work. 💯 Instead, we’re going to focus on building one healthy habit at a time! 👏
