3 Tips to Feel Better in Your Closet
Oct 26, 2022How are you feeling about your closet right now? I hear you. You know it needs some attention but you don’t know where to start.
Do you feel like it’s a treat getting ready each day or does it feel like a trick? Don’t be haunted by clothing that no longer serves your personal style. Try these 3 tips to get immediate relief.
- Cleaning Time. When was the last time you removed everything out of your closet to give it a really good clean? Don’t be horrified – you are not alone. People rarely clean the inside of their closets. You wouldn’t eat off a dirty plate so why would you hang clean clothes in a dusty closet? Grab your broomstick, I mean your vacuum or mop and get the dust bunnies off the floor. Use a wet cloth to dust the tops of hangers. You will be amazed at how much better it feels and smells.
- Reflection. Does your wardrobe reflect your life? Ask yourself these questions:
- do you work?
- are you currently raising children or grandchildren?
- do you travel?
- are you happy with your weight and well-being?
- any special events coming up?
- where do you live and what is the climate?
You change. We all do. You want to make sure your wardrobe changes with you. If you have had big changes then from a psychological point of view you might not have let go of your old life. Are you hanging onto an old life in your closet?
Sometimes when you move to another state you don’t think about the change of wardrobe you will need. Maybe you’ve recently retired or only work from home now and no longer need the suited looks.
It doesn’t take that long to touch every piece of clothing in your closet and decide if it fits your current life. If it doesn’t – it’s time to let it go. If you are letting it go, you need to decide if it goes to consignment, gets donated to a charity or given to friends. I have found women to be very intuitive and if your gut tells you, it’s time to let it go, then let it go. Even if it was a gift from a friend or family member. I give you permission to let it go.
If it is something very special to you that you don’t want to let go of then find a container that slides under your bed and make that container your “memory box.” Store all those precious garments in there and revisit them when you need to.
And if in doubt about a piece, try it on. If it is too small, please put it in another closet until it does fit. If after one year it still doesn’t fit then let it go. If it is too large, get it out of the house. You will not be going back to that size.
3. Hang it up. Once you have only the pieces in your closet that fit your current life, it’s time to switch to matching hangers. Hanging clothes on matching hangers makes your closet seem like a boutique. You would never walk into a store and see mismatched hangers. Your closet is your shrine, your sanctuary – you need to treat it as such.
I prefer wooden hangers. Plastic ones are fine if they are all the same color. Velvet hangers are very popular and don’t take up as much room in your closet. Wire hangers need to be thrown away. They can snag or tear delicate fabrics and could cause long-term damage to your clothes.
The type of hanger you choose is a lot more important than you may think. And it could take some time if purchasing all the hangers if it is cost prohibited.
Once you make these changes you will feel a transformation to your look and your life. It’s truly a great feeling. Better than biting into a Butterfinger!
